AMARILLO, TEXAS -- As the summer months approach, schools want to stress the importance of keeping their students minds engaged. Thursday, Reeves-Hinger Elementary kicked off their summer reading program. Pronews 7 is featuring it, in this week's Region 16 Spotlight Education Report.
Characters from students favorite books came to life Thursday, at Reeves-Hinger Elementary. The school kicked off their "Summer Reading Book Giveaway". Giving two books to each students and a bookmark with reading strategy tips. Staff from Canyon's library were also on hand to tell kids about exciting stuff happening there this summer.
"Studies show that if kids don't read over the summer they can loose up to three months of their reading skills. So reading over the summer even if its just three or four times a week for just a few minutes," said Bethany McMillion, Teacher.
For students, they're ready to start reading. Saying they have more time to read their favorites during the summer months.
"I like reading and don't have to do it at school," said Hudson Holt, student.
"I have a lot of books at home that I haven't read because I don't have time after school," said Danielle Burns, Student.
For parents, teachers are encouraging you to spend time reading with your kids.
"Doing it anywhere, you know you can read on the beach if you take a trip, you can make a fort underneath the kitchen table, you can read in the car while you're traveling or make it a nightly routine before you go to bed. so it doesn't have to be home work kind of reading, it just had to be having a good time with your kids and talking to them and having conversations," said McMillon.
The books were purchased through funds made by campus-wide book sales, and generous donations from Education Credit Union and Chicken Express.
