AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Hundreds gathered at the Texas Panhandle War Memorial to honor all Gold Star families who lost a family member to the war.
With Memorial Day so close the Texas Panhandle War Memorial Foundation wanted to pay tribute to fallen heros from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. "I know it's still a hollow feeling in the hearts of what they've lost and what the heroes sacrificed, but it's for freedom and people have to understand freedom is not free," said Fred Rangel, President of the Texas Panhandle War Memorial Foundation. One person who knows that better than anyone is aurora fernandez who lost her son to the war. "He died for our freedom I don't ever want him to be forgotten or not any of the soldiers," said Fernandez. Forgotten is not something Rangel said he would ever allow, "Having ceremonies like this is just a tribute and also the ceremony itself it's a feeling that you'll never forget."
Fernandez said you never forget the moment when the army comes and tells you we regret to inform you that your son has died, and that ceremonies like these help her cope with her son's death. "It's just touches your heart," said Fernandez.
Fernandez went on to say she just wants anyone who has lost someone to know that they won't be forgotten because of organizations like the Texas Panhandle War Memorial.
