AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The theme was "Dig Up a Good Book," as the Amarillo Public Library's annual Summer Reading Program got started Monday.
Its goal is to keep students interested in reading.
The kids will keep track of how much time they accumulate reading and every time they hit one of their scheduled checkpoints, they'll get a prize.
They range from a dinosaur mask to a squirt gun, and of course, at the end, they can pick a free book.
And sticking with the dinosaur theme, the library has created a 20-foot "Tyranodon," so the kids can compete for naming rights.
"I've had all kinds of mothers and kids and all kinds of people in general come in and ask about it, so it's an eye catcher and hopefully that will capture and holds kids interest in reading which of course is what the summer reading program is all about is to encourage reading," said Cynthia Hunt, the Library Program Specialist.
Kids will also be involved in events each week, like a fire safety program where firemen squirt the kids with water.
