ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO (AP) -- Red light cameras in Albuquerque are going dark after the city failed to enact a contract extension with Redflex Traffic Systems.
The mayor's office and Redflex did reach an agreement on an extension, but the City Council didn't approve it.
Councilors opted against rushing the contract onto their agenda last week because the meeting was already packed with budget proposals and amendments. The council is scheduled to meet again until June 6.
The Albuquerque Journal reports Mayor Richard Berry has proposed a one-year contract with Redflex that could be renewed annually for another five years.
City officials say the contract was tailored to make the program pay for itself without a city subsidy.
The cameras would remain at 14 intersections, and fines would remain at $75.
