AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The school year is almost over. Athletes from Westover Park Junior High School are reflecting on their year of good deeds. A group of 8th grade athletes are part of a group called, "LEAP" which stands for Leadership Empowerment and Advanced Program. Throughout the school year they've been giving back to their community and school. Pronews 7 is focusing on this group in this week's Region 16 Spotlight Education report.

This group of 8th grade girl athletes, have been setting an example for their entire school all year.

"We made blankets for Jan Werners, we made bracelets for our school so we could sell them and give the money to Make-A-Wish Foundation and we went to the High Plains Food Bank and helped there and we picked up trash around the school to help the custodians.," said McKenzie Burney, 8th grader.

Students say it's been a joy to give back.

"Not only just helping with the community but creating bounds with people outside of your schools," said Kennedy Ansley, 8th Grader.

Students say they're hoping their actions and good deeds are leaving behind a legacy for their younger classmates to live up to next school year. Many already plan to keep up those good deeds this summer.

"A few of my friends and everybody else said they were going to go to Jan Werner over the summer visit with them and play games, volunteer and pick up trash around the school or something," said Krista Merritt, 8th Grader.

"I think I may want to visit the food banks and help with the garden," said Ansley.

The girls coach actually though of starting up this program last year and says they're hoping to keep it going.
