AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Republican lawmakers have unveiled their proposed map for new congressional districts.
At first glance, it appears to make sure Republicans continue to hold almost all of the Texas seats in Congress. Texas will add four new congressional seats in the 2012 election because of population growth.
Redistricting is not on the agenda of the special legislative session, but Republicans introduced the map anyway. Gov. Rick Perry may add the item to the agenda if he wishes.
The proposal adds a new district that stretches from Austin to San Antonio and another one that stretches from Houston into East Texas, among others.
Republicans say the map makes the most sense, but Democrats say it discriminates against minorities. Any congressional map is subject to federal approval under the Voting Rights Act.
