It's been one of the worst years for wildfires in the Panhandle and officials in one county are taking a stance to prevent more fires during the Fourth of July season.
Carson County has declared a local state of disaster based on the threat of large wildfires in the area. In a proclamation signed by County Judge Lewis Powers, it declares that the sale and use of fireworks is prohibited in the county.
The ban only lasts 60 hours but a request has been sent to the Governor's office to extend the state of disaster and the sale and use of fireworks through July 5. If the Governor find that extending the ban is justified, it can be extended until after the red, white and blue holiday.
In other words, the future of fireworks in Carson County lies in the hands of Governor Perry.
This is the first county in the Panhandle Pronews 7 has heard of to ban the sale and use of fireworks this year.
