AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Four churches in the Amarillo-Canyon area, Comanche Trails, Central Church of Christ, Church of Christ at the Colonies, and University Church of Christ in Canyon, were hard at work today doing service projects around town.

But they didn't send adults, most of the participants were middle school students who came together to get introduced to in town mission work.

When most people think mission work, they think about helping people around the world, but in the case of these churches, it's all about helping the people in your community.

Many different church's come and we do it together, I'm form a different church than she is but we all communicate and go out in different crews and we get to know each other as people," said Boyd Burch, one of the young missionaries.

From playing with kids their own age, to going to retirement homes and spending time with their elders, these young missionaries are doing their part to bring a smile to a lot of faces around Amarillo.

"We do a variety of different activities so maybe they will find one of them they'll enjoy, playing with kids, or maybe with the elderly or service like out at the food bank," said Derek Chance, a Youth Minister at Comanche Trails Church of Christ.

Of course, we all hope these kids will find missionary work they'll like to do, but don't worry, you can tell they enjoy it.

"We get to come out in the community and help other people and to do things for other people who are less fortuante than us and I think that is a really cool experience," said Synda McDonald, another youth missionary.

"I think they find out that service can be fun, especially if you do it in a group and it's rewarding, because you go home and you feel good at night because you did something nice for somebody else," said Chance.

The program is called "Mission in Action," and these kids are definitely doing their part.

The young missionaries will continue their work until Wednesday, putting in more than six hours of work a day, but all of the students agreed that it's for a greater cause and they enjoy doing the work.
