ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - An audit of New Mexico schools says 12 percent of the seniors who graduated last year didn't deserve their diplomas.
The report from the Legislative Finance Committee also showed that 25 percent of Native American males graduated without fulfilling state-mandated math requirements.
The numbers are based on a sample of about 3,000 graduates from 10 high schools.
The director of the University of New Mexico's Center for Education Policy Research told the Albuquerque Journal that he doesn't think schools are deliberately undermining the law. Peter Winograd says he thinks the complexity of high school credits -- which include things like internships and online courses -- leads to honest mistakes.
The report comes as the state struggles to increase its graduation rate, which was 67.3 percent last year.
