AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Amarillo's unemployment rate for May rose slightly compared to April, according to the Texas Workforce Commission.
Thee unemployment rate went from 5.2 percent to 5.4 percent. While it may seem hugh, it is about three points lower than the state average.
On the state level, the May rate is the same as it was in April at 8 percent.
Going back a year, Amarillo's unemployment rate was at 5.3 percent in May 2010.
Texas continues to increase private-sector jobs with almost 11,000 new manufacturing jobs in the past year. As for total nonfarm employment, jobs were up by 8,800 jobs in May, a gain of more than 205,000 jobs from last year.
The Midland area has the lowest unemployment rate for May at 4.6 percent; the highest went to the McAllen-Edinburh-Mission area with 11.9 percent.
