LUNA, NM (AP) - The Wallow Fire burning in eastern Arizona and western New Mexico is 51 percent contained after burning 519,319 acres. The wildfire is now 811 square miles.
The U.S. Forest Service says residents of Greer, Ariz., are being allowed to return home Monday. The Apache County Sheriff's Office says Greer residents must go to the Round Valley High School Dome at 11:00 a.m. to receive a pass. Evacuees must have valid identification verifying residency in order to enter.
The wind driven fire spread to the northeast past Luna, N.M. Crews are working to keep it in check at Forest Road 19. Airplanes were dropping water and fire suppression chemicals before winds kicked up. The fire has crossed Trout Creek and is moving toward Bishop Canyon in New Mexico.
