AMARILLO, TEXAS -- It's a life saving device and now the Amarillo Fire Department has the means to hand out a few more to local citizens.

We're talking about smoke detectors and Wednesday morning, Next Era Energy presented the Amarillo Fire Department with $4,000 that will go toward their smoke detector program. As part of the program, AFD purchases, distributes and installs smoke detectors for free in the homes of those who are without them.

"A smoke detector is what's going to save your life in a fire," said Wes Hall, Amarillo Fire Department Captain. "If you don't have a warning, it's going to be hard to get out of that fire while you're asleep so we're set on having everybody in amarillo having a smoke detector."

To find out if you meet the requirements to have the fire department purchase and install a smoke detector in your home, you can call their office at 378-9340.

You can also enter to win a smoke detector by taking the Xcel Safety quiz, here.
