AMARILLO, TEXAS -- "I drive and work for a living and I come down this street everyday at least 4-5 times a day", said local Amarillo citizen and frequent Grand Street driver, Peggy Daves.
If you've been anywhere near the intersection of 3rd and Grand in Amarillo, you've seen the huge undertaking that's hogging the road.
But the mess that's slowing you down right now will eventually become the new Grand Street overpass.
"We won't be stopping at the train tracks as much, we'll be going over it. It'll be better for everybody I think because when they stop at the train tracks sometimes it's 15 minutes, sometimes it's 30 minutes that you have to stop", adds Daves.
Since the start of the 7 million dollar project last fall, a four way stop has been placed at the intersection, traffic has been reduced to one lane each way and TxDOT has closed South East 3rd Street between Grand and Eastern.
But locals say, finding timely alternate routes isn't always easy.
"More than likely you're going to get stopped by the train anyway and everybody else has the same idea and we're all stuck over there", said Daves.
Despite the current frustration with construction and backed up traffic, local drivers say the new overpass is worth the wait.
"It's going to be a good project, but it's well past due to do it. I'll just be glad when it's done", continues Daves.
Also, Industrial streets north of South East 3rd are closed.
Motorists will need to find alternate routes until at least September, which is the projected date for those roads to be re-opened.
