AMARILLO, TEXAS -- It's a 24-year-old cold case police were able to close late last year. And now the man who killed Florencio Calzada back in December 1986 has been indicted in the case.

A Randall County Grand Jury indicted Johnny Ray Klein Wednesday for the shooting death of Calzada which happened nearly a quarter of a century ago. He was indicted on the charges of murder and aggravated assault.

The case was opened at the end of October 2010 when Special Crimes received a tip. Special Crimes was contacted by a person who said they had information regarding the unsolved homicide.

Amarillo Police said it was back on Dec. 8, 1986 when a passerby spotted the body of a man in a car ditch at Interstate 27 and FM 285 near Wayside. It was 4:15 in the morning.

The man was later identified as Florencio Calzada, age 31.

Calzada has been shot once in the head, according to police. He had been involved in a minor accident in the same area the prior evening around 10. A farmer provided provided assistance. Between that time and 4:15 was when Calzada was shot.

Once the case was reopened, several people were contacted who had information on the incident, including an eyewitness. November 29, Randall County District Attorney James Farren issued an arrest warrant for Johnny Ray Klein, 48. He was arrested that day in Wichita Falls.

He was booked into the Randall County Jail for the murder.

Klein's name was not found in the original investigation indicating he was a suspect.
