AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The unemployment rate in Amarillo is the second lowest in the state despite the fact the rate rose by one percentage point since May.
New numbers released by theTexas Workforce Commission indicate Amarillo's June unemployment rate was at 6.4 percent, up from 5.4 percent in May. Back in June 2010, Amarillo's unemployment rate was lower at 5.9 percent.
As for the state of Texas, the unemployment rate remains well below the national average. At 8.2 percent Texas is one full percentage point below the national average of 9.2 percent.
"Overall, our Goods-Producing industries combined to add 11,200 jobs in June," said Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Chairman Tom Pauken. "As businesses continue to shift resources into Texas, new opportunities arise for job seekers already here, and for those who come here looking for opportunity."
The city with the lowest unemployment rate in Texas was Midland at 5.2 percent. The highest unemployment rate was in the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission area at 13 percent.
