AMARILLO, TEXAS -- 24 Hours in the Canyon, perhaps one of the area's most successful and well-known charitable organizations, announced Tuesday it raised more than $110,000 for The Don and Sybil Harrington Cancer Center.
The organization donated $112,000 to the Power of ONE Expansion Campaign. It was able to raise the money through its annual bicycle event.
This was the fifth year for the bike ride which goes through parts of Palo Duro Canyon. Event organizers said more than 500 riders participated in this year's fundraiser on the weekend of June 4 and 5.
"We had a record turnout this year and a number of generous supporters who want to make a direct impact in the lives of cancer patients," said Ryan Parnell. "By giving to Harrington's expansion campaign, and specifically to name the Multi-Disciplinary Clinic in the new building, we can give cancer patients from across the Panhandle the ultimate gift of a modern, state-of-the-art location for one-stop cancer treatment."
The event's motto is "cancer doesn't sleep... why should we?" The motto holds true when cyclists ride for 24 hours straight.
Since 24 Hours in the Canyon's Inception, it's raised a total of $319,000.
"Harrington Cancer Center is extremely grateful to the volunteers, sponsors, and riders of 24 Hours in the Canyon for their tireless efforts to bring this great event to Palo Duro Canyon, raising awareness of the important mission of Harrington Cancer Center and providing funds which directly benefit our patients," said Dr. Paul Hancock, Chief Executive Officer of The Don & Sybil Harrington Cancer Center. "Ryan Parnell and his team understand what it means to unselfishly give back to the community."
The Power of ONE campaign was launched in September 2010 to build a new $25 million, 100,000 square foot patient facility for the Harrington Cancer Center. It will be located between the current facility and Baptist Saint Anthony Hospital.
Harrington Cancer Center is the only non-profit cancer center in the Panhandle area.
