AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Potter County officials are now searching for information on several grassfires that were set intentionally by using fireworks in North Amarillo.
Sheriff Brian Thomas said in a release the fires happened during the early morning hours of Thursday and Friday. As many as 10 grassfires were started using fireworks as the ignitions source.
The locations of the fires are at Brickplant Road, in the 2800 block of West Cherry, 8800 block of Arlie, 7500 block of Leroy and the Intersection of Potomac and Arlie.
Officials say the suspect or suspects were driving around in a vehicle while intentionally starting the fires. At least two of the fires were started by the suspects putting explosive fireworks inside mailboxes. It is believed other grassfires started as a result of a firework similar to a Roman candle.
Fortunately the grassfires have caused no substantial monetary losses. The suspects allegedly shot the fireworks from a moving vehicle into dried grass.
According to Thomas, the likelihood of a catastrophic fire is high if this criminal activity continues.
While the Potter County fireworks ban expired, the burn ban is still in full effect. That means, outside burning is prohibited.
Anyone with information on these intentional fires is asked to call the Potter County Shewriff's Office at 379-2900.
