Been outside lately? If so, you know that it's been hot.
But is hot the right word to describe this summer's extreme temperatures?
According to the National Weather Service, July 2011 was the H O T T E S T month EVER for Amarillo!
The average monthly temperature was 85.2 degrees. As for the average daily high, it was 99.6 degrees. In other words, it was H O T.
This breaks the record of the previous hottest month set back in July 1934. That's a 77-year-old record!
In July, 16 days had a high temperature that exceeded 100 degrees. This brings the year's total to 32 days.
Dalhart and Lubbock also recorded July 2011 as the hottest month ever.
2011 has already proved to be a record-breaking year. In June, Amarillo saw its warmest temperature ever recorded at 111 degrees. Amarillo also broke the record for the most days with a temperature exceeding 100 degrees.
The National Weather Service has been keeping records in Amarillo since 1892.
