AMARILLO, TEXAS --
Red light-related crashes dropped by 46 percent at an Amarillo intersection after traffic cameras were installed, a new study found.
The study conducted by the Texas Transportation Institute looked at nearly 300 intersections in the Lonestar State. It found the installation of red light cameras may have helped to drop crashes by 25 percent statewide at those intersections.
"This study if it is correct you know, shows a significant drop, but we have seen red light violations go down all over the city so we know it's working, and I'm talking about where there's not cameras, we still don't seem to have as many people running red lights," said City Commissioner Jim Simms.
In Amarillo, the intersection of Coulter and Elmhurst was studied.
During the year-long study, it found that before red-light cameras were installed, there were 34 red light-related crashes. After the installation of the cameras, there were a total of 22 red light-related crashes.
That's 12 less crashes after the cameras were installed for a decrease of 46 percent.
Red light cameras were installed in Amarillo in 2008.
