AMARILLO, TX -- Amarillo Habitat for Humanity had a groundbreaking Friday for its first home project of 2011.
In order to qualify for a new home, applicants must put in 500 hours of sweat equity, also known as volunteer labor, and attend financial stability classes.
The organization carries the home's mortgage at zero percent for 25 years, making payments affordable for low-income families.
BJ Alcazar has met all of these requirements and will be the owner of this project’s home.
“I don't have words for it,” she said crying. “I don't know what to say, except I'm really grateful. This wouldn't have happened without God and He provided the way."
Amarillo Habitat for Humanity Development Director Becky Davis said BJ is deserving of this home and that everyone who qualifies must work hard for that recognition."
"BJ is just like all of our other family partners: very hard-working,” she said. “They have a strength of character that is amazing and they go through a process of qualifying for our homes."
This particular project is being referred to as an apostles build because of the 12 churches involved. The churches have provided funding and the volunteer labor to build the home.
Alcazar will help the volunteers set up the first wall of her home Saturday morning.
