CANYON, TEXAS -- The City of Canyon plans to do what many cities and counties have done to balance the budget, raise taxes.
According to Canyon City Manager Randy Criswell, the city wanted a budget that would not result in an interruption of city services.
He says that was difficult with very little general fund revenue, so raising taxes was how it was balanced.
"At the last meeting our commission took a record vote to adopt a tax rate that would be 5.8 percent above the affected tax rate which is about 4.5 percent above the current rate that would be the maximum that could be adopted."
Criswell also says since then, they have done some more work and it's possible they could adopt a lower tax rate than that.
It would be around 3.3 percent, or $14 for a $120,000 home, but tonight was just a public hearing for discussion, and no action was taken.
