CANYON, TEXAS -- West Texas A&M University's Agriculture Ambassadors spent their Saturday morning repairing the grounds at Reeves-Hinger Elementary School in Canyon.

Ag Ambassador Program Advisor Lance Kieth said the students in the program are unique in that they have been selected for the program as some of the top students in their field of study.

"Our Ag Ambassador program is a group of students in the College of Agriculture Science that have been nominated based on their leadership abilities, their academic performance in the classroom and improving themselves to be leaders in our university community."

The program requires the students to take part in leadership training and community service and The Learning Garden at Reeves-Hinger was a good place in which to start.  Students in the program said they didn't mind the hard work.

"It's awesome to go out and we get to represent our school and our ag college," said Student Taylor Hurst.  "We need to give back to our community.  And that's what we do.  It's what we're a part of, so we want to be here early in the morning sweating."

Jessica Bartel said putting personal time into a major contribution is something that builds moral for the rest of a person's life.

"I think that'll further you in your life, no matter what you're doing," she said.  "So, this is just a learning experience in itself."

Several other beautification projects are scheduled for the elementary school this year.  To donate individually or as a business, call Joi Lunsford at 806-683-6497 or email her at jlunsford@canyonisd.net.
