CANYON, TEXAS -- Good news for West Texas A&M University, enrollment continues to rise.
12-class-day enrollment figures for the fall 2011 semester are in and they show steady growth with 7,913 students compared to 7,847 in fall 2010.
The University says enrollment is up in each undergraduate classification. The senior class showed the largest increase with nearly 2,000 students.
WT's freshman class was second with 1,614 students, up from last year as well.
Graduate students also increased to 1,080 students compared to 925 last fall.
"This year's growth in enrollment is a positive reflection of student interest in West Texas A&M University and our increasing role in educating future leaders," Dan Garcia, vice president for enrollment management, said in a release. "But perhaps most important, the quality of our student body-both in terms of academic preparation and involvement in student activities-seems to just keep getting better each year"
Texas residents make up 7,007 students and out-of-state students total 664. As for international students, WT is now the home for 217.
At WT's Amarillo Center, the student headcount is also up at 721. Last year's enrollment was 661. Class enrollment is also up at the Amarillo Center: 1,028 compared to 847 last fall.
Here are additional enrollment stats according to WTAMU:
• Female students (4,408) continue to outnumber male students (3,505);
• Hispanic enrollment increased from 1,501 in fall 2010 to 1,566 for fall 2011;
• On-campus residency jumped from 1,651 in fall 2010 to 1,704 this year;
• Commuters account for 62,02 percent of the student population (4,908);
• The average undergraduate age is 23.2, and the overall age is 24.8 compared to 25.0 last year;
• The largest age group falls in the 23-30 age group with 1,901 students; and
• The fall 2011 student body is comprised of 5,696 full-time students and 2,217 part-time students.
