Capitol Hill was divided Monday when President Obama announced his plan to cut the national debt by some $3 trillion dollars.
The deficit reduction package includes reduced spending in mandatory benefits programs like Medicare and Medicaid. The proposed plan expects to save about $1 trillion dollars over ten years through the withdrawal of troops overseas.
The controversial "Buffett Rule" is part of the plan and aims at raising taxes on the wealthy. That's one reason Republicans like Congressman Mac Thornberry don't believe the proposal will make it through Congress.
"Most commentators, independents and republicans are not taking this seriously. They're saying this is about President Obama trying to shore up his political base. He knows Congress will never pass it so he's throwing this out there and that's really the disappointing part of this", Congressman Mac Thornberry told Pronews 7.
It is said the new plan does not include any proposals that have to do with Social Security reform.
