AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The Wallabies at the Amarillo Zoo are now sharing their environment with seven-month-old Red Kangaroo Mikey.
Mikey was offered to the zoo this summer after his owner could no longer care for him due to health reasons. After some time in quarantine, Mikey was introduced to the other marsupials and now shares a home with them.
Red Kangaroos are herbivores and males can grow to be up to six feet tall.
Zookeepers said he has adapted well to his new home and they hope he will have some fellow companions before too long.
"In the wild, they would probably be still coming in and out of their mom's pouch during that time," Amarillo Zoo Curator Rhonda Votina said. "But he's a hand-raised animal, so he's very accustomed to people. He's a young, neutered male and hopefully we'll add some more to the group."
The Amarillo Zoo is open seven days a week. Mikey has been introduced to the public, so head on out and check out the latest attraction!
