AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Hundreds of people gathered at Sam Houston Park Saturday morning for the Panhandle Down Syndrome Guild's 10th Annual Buddy Walk.
The walk, thought of more as a festival by some, offered food, games and rides for everyone who came to celebrate the teachers, therapists and sponsors who have given their time to help the people who have Down Syndrome.
Down Syndrome is a genetic illness which causes the body to have an extra chromosome, resulting in different physical traits than those who do not have the extra chromosome.
Event volunteers said they were pleased with the turnout and that the walk was a big success.
"We have some of the best therapists, teachers and sponsors, I think, in the nation for a city this size," Panhandle Down Syndrome Guild's Jeff Medford said. "This is in the top 15 percent of walks in the country and nobody has more fun than what we do."
