AMARILLO, TEXAS -- We already said goodnight to nighttime speed limits. Now, we can finally say goodbye to those speed limit signs.

As of Sept. 1 drivers in Texas were able to disregard those speed limit signs that had a nighttime limit posted. A new law eliminated the 65 mph nighttime speed limit and all truck speed limits.

Although those speed limits were not enforceable, the signs have still remained. That will soon change.

Texas Department of Transportation will now be busy removing the signs from Panhandle roadways. The contracted work will take about three weeks to finish, TxDOT said.

Along with getting rid of nighttime speed limits, the law allows for the possibility of speed limits to be raised across the state. In order for speed limits to change, a speed engineering study must be completed and the change must be approved by the Texas Transportation Commission. The process is expected to take about 18 months to complete.
