HOUSTON (AP) - A group of current and former prosecutors and lawmakers are asking Texas Gov. Rick Perry and other state officials to delay the upcoming execution of an inmate so DNA evidence in his case can be tested.
Hank Skinner is set for execution Nov. 9 for the 1993 deaths of his girlfriend and her two sons in the Texas Panhandle town of Pampa.
His lawyers have asked state and federal courts to order the tests, which they say could show Skinner is innocent.
But prosecutor Lynn Switzer has argued the testing is an attempt by the 49-year-old Skinner to delay his execution.
On Thursday, officials, including former Texas Gov. Mark White, sent a letter to Perry, Switzer and state Attorney General Greg Abbott asking them to allow the testing.
