TULIA, TEXAS -- Swisher Co. Sheriff Emmett Benavidez has resigned just as an investigation was launched about alleged inappropriate behavior.
According to the Swisher County Judge's Office, a complaint had been made about inappropriate behavior allegedly done by Benavidez. A release said the alleged behavior appeared to violate the county's policy regarding the "kind of work environment that the Commissioner's Count and the citizens of Swisher County want to have for their employees."
The inappropriate behavior was reportedly sexual harrassment of other employees of the county, media outlets reported.
Once Benavidez was informed about the launch of an investigation about the alleged behavior, he expressed his intention to resign.
He submitted his letter of resignation Tuesday that said he wished to retire as Sheriff immediately. Late Thursday afternoon, the Commissioner's Court accepted the resignation.
The release said it was understood that all parties involved wished to "get this matter behind them."
Commissioners will meet next Monday about the procedures to fill the vacancy for the remainder of Benavidez's term. An appointment will be made as soon as possible.
The filing period for someone to be placed on the ballot is from Nov. 28 to Dec. 15.
Benavidez has been associated with the Swisher County Sheriff's Office for more than 25 years.
