AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Thanksgiving eve is commonly referred to as the busiest travel day of the year.
Whether it be by land or by air, Americans travel all over the country to visit family and loved ones.
Wednesday, we went to Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport, to see just how many people are leaving and coming into the Panhandle for the holiday.
The airport terminal was full of people waiting for their loved ones to de-plane and go home for the holiday.
"It's been a steady stream of people and obviously more than we have on a typical weekday," said Director of Aviation Pat Rhodes.
That also means more travel time from home to the airport.
"Well just getting to the airport there's a lot more cars on the road and a lot more people in the airport, so yeah, it's a lot busier," said Holiday Traveler, Randy Fehlberg.
Despite the heavy traffic day at the airport, Rhodes says everyone on staff just goes about their business as if it were just another day.
"Just a lot more activity and we all know this is a special day in our year, so we pay a little more attention to what's going on, but because there is more activity it's much easier to pay attention to things happening."
While that may be true for airport staff, Fehlberg, who is flying with his son to Indianapolis to see family, says you have to plan things out ahead of time.
"You have to leave a little earlier, and you have to get to the airport a lot earlier if you want to be on time."
That's not just for those who are getting on a plane, it's also for family members who are waiting on their loved ones to arrive.
"The planes are full for the most part and then there are a lot of family groups coming in and out so you have more meeter greeters and there's just a lot more people in the building."
Rhodes says things have gone smoothly and he hopes they stay that way.
Fehlberg validates that, "Everything has been the same security has been great, people have been friendly, so yeah, no big problems."
Fehlberg also said he is looking forward to seeing his son and spending time with his family during the holiday.
