AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The first snowstorm of the season made the Amarillo roads extremely hazardous, resulting in numerous traffic accidents.

The Amarillo Police Dept. received 170 calls between 5 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday about traffic wrecks.  Crimes Prevention Sgt. Brent Barbee offered some tips to help keep people safe while they are out and about.

"The main thing is slow down, start early, plan on maybe being a little bit late," he said.  "And understand that the physics are just working against us all.  We can't get here as quickly as we'd like to."

-Avoid travel if it is not necessary

-Clean the windshield and windows of the vehicle for good visibility

-Accelerate and slow down gradually

-Be mindful at intersections

-Do not rush once on the roads

-Keep a good distance from the vehicle ahead
