AMARILLO, TEXAS -- A few dogs and puppies at the Amarillo Animal Control Center enjoyed a tasty treat on Thursday.

After collecting "Kongs" or rubber chew toys for dogs for about two months, City Commissioner Ellen Robertson Green and local citizen Jena McFall delivered 130 Kongs to the shelter Thursday. The chew toys were donated by animal lovers across the country for the shelter animals to enjoy and to help provide a happier environment to live in while there.

"You stuff food, treats, they've stuffed them with peanut butter for is and it gives the animals something to play with to keep their mind active and something to distract them while they're here," said Shannon Barlow, Amarillo Animal Control Center Assistant Director.

The effort to enrich the lives of the animals at the shelter came about after Commissioner Green and other city officials took a tour of the facility a few months ago.
