AMARILLO, TEXAS -- With the drought we suffered through this past year, finding ways to conserve water becomes even more important.
That's why Thursday, producers and farmers from across our part of the country attended the all-day High Plains Irrigation Conference. Twelve speakers spoke to them about irrigation use and ways to do it more efficiently without decreasing their yields. They all know, if we continue to use our water inefficiently, everyone will suffer.
"Basically trying to sustain livelihoods and becoming much more efficient with that water," said Irrigation Specialist and Agricultural Engineer for Texas AgriLife Extension Service. "We've seen it happen in places where the water has dried, so has the economy, so has the whole community and I think we've got some resources now that will help precent that with some of our High Plains communities."
Kenny also spoke about a recent project called EPIC -- Efficient Profitable Irrigation in Corn. He said it's important for farmers to understand how to manage that crop because it can account for up to 75 percent of their water usage.
