AMARILLO, TEXAS -- A 21-year-old Canyon man was killed Thursday evening in a four-car pileup on Interstate 40 near the US 287 split.

Kendrick Ray Powell, 21, of Canyon was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

A 2002 Ford Mustang, which was traveling eastbound at around 9:30 p.m., crossed the center median into the westbound lanes, police said. The car was driven by 30-year-old Christopher Easterday of Amarillo.

According to police, the median vaulted Easterday into the oncoming traffic. The Mustang struck a 2004 Nissan Frontier driven by Powell, police said.

The Mustang, officials said, then struck a 2000 Ford Ranger driven by 48-year-old Gustavo Ohara of Canyon.

The Ford Ranger was struck by a 2006 Chevy Cobalt driven by William Dillehay, 48, of Amarillo, police said.

Easterday was transported to a local hospital with live threatening injuries. Ohara and Dillehay were not injured, police added.

Police said speed and alcohol were factors in this wreck. It continues to be under investigation.
