OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The Humane Society of the United States is alleging that pork producers Seaboard Foods and Prestage Farms Inc. are mistreating pregnant pigs on Oklahoma farms by keeping them in so-called "gestation cages."
The Humane Society's Paul Shapiro said at an Oklahoma City news conference on Tuesday the pigs are kept "like parked cars" for months in small cages and are unable to turn around.
Veterinarian Ron Prestage with North Carolina-based Prestage said in a statement that the company is investigating the allegations and that the well-being of the animals is taken "very seriously."
An official with Kansas-based Seaboard did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
Shapiro said The Humane Society wants the companies to use more spacious quarters for the pigs.
