AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The Amarillo Police SWAT officer that was involved in a shooting that resulted in a multiple-hour standoff on Feb. 6 has been cleared.
"The Grand Jury heard the presentation of the special crimes unit in regards to the incident out on I-40," said 47th District Attorney Randall Sims. "The Grand Jury found no wrong going on behalf of the officer and the firing of one round."
It was on Feb. 6 when a standoff ensued for about three and a half hours at the Super 8 motel near Quarter Horse Drive off Interstate 40.
Amarillo Police said the SWAT team was working on another case that led it to the Super 8 motel. A SWAT member knocked on a room door at the motel and a man inside threw a rifle out the window, police said.
Police then said an officer was coming around a corner of the building when he saw through a window a man with a pistol. The man then pointed the pistol toward the officer and the officer fired a shot, police said.
The man was identified as 31-year-old Don Albritten. The officer's identity is not being released.
As for the officer, he has already returned to duty, Sims said.
