MESQUITE, Texas (AP) - The FBI arrested a man in suburban Dallas yesterday after a lockdown at an apartment complex in Mesquite. Authorities say they were trying to arrest 41-year-old Ronald William Brooks on a drug warrant when he fled on a motorcycle and raced to the apartment complex. He was eventually arrested after a door-to-door search.
EL PASO, Texas (AP) - An alleged lieutenant of the Sinaloa cartel has been indicted in the U.S. for conspiracy in the kidnappings and deaths of a West Texas man and three men from New Mexico. Authorities say Jose Antonio Torres-Marrufo ran the cartel's operation in Juarez, Mexico.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - A trial begins today in Connecticut for the former butler of a philanthropist who's accused of trying to extort millions from the ex-wife of a Texas billionaire. Prosecutors say Emanuel Nicolescu and two other assailants injected Anne H. Bass and made a chilling ultimatum: Hand over millions of dollars for the antidote, or die from a deadly virus. Investigators say the injection was likely a harmless ink.
WACO, Texas (AP) - The family of the former owner of the Houston Astros is giving Baylor University the largest capital gift in school history. The undisclosed sum from Drayton McLane Junior's family will be used to help build a new football stadium. School officials say the gift topped a $20 million donation it received in 1998.
