AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas is getting $51.1 million from the U.S. Department of Education to help the state's lowest-achieving schools.
Education Secretary Arne Duncan made the announcement in a news release on Thursday.
The funds - which come from the department's School Improvement Grants program - are part of $535 million provided through the fiscal year 2011 budget and made available to states.
Duncan says the program helps give school leaders and teachers "the means to accomplish the very difficult work of turning around some of our hardest to serve schools."
