RANDALL COUNTY, TEXAS -- A two-year-old toddler remains in intensive care at an Amarillo hospital after she was injured in a hit-and-run accident that killed her mother.
According to the Randall County Sheriff's Office, the body of 29-year-old Melissa Rico of Roswell, N.M., was found in the roadway of the northbound service road of Interstate 27 just south of McCormick Road at about 2:23 a.m. Saturday. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Additionally, a small child was also found a few feet from the woman's body, police said.
The child, identified as two-year-old Myra Rico was transported to Northwest Texas Hospital where she remains in intensive care with life-threatening head injuries, police said.
The Randall County Sheriff's Office said it determined the accident was a hit-and-run. According to family members, police said Rico left a residence in the Amberwood addition and was walking with her two-year-old child.
During the investigation, police said the family of the hit-and-run driver returned to the scene. The driver has been identified but is not facing charges at this time. He was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier and is described as a rural resident of Randall County.
The Randall County Sheriff's Office said the case will be presented to the Grand Jury to determine if any charges will be filed.
This case is being investigated as an accident, authorities said.
