AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Students at Trinity Lutheran Christian School raised more than $1,200 on March 9 when they marched around the Amarillo Zoo.
The 661 laps, which estimated to be about 300 miles total among all the students, turned out to be above and beyond the goal the school set. Principal Rick Ryan told the students he would dress up as a tiger, the school's mascot, if they could meet the $650 goal. And sure enough, that seemed to more than motivate the children as they raised nearly double that amount- Principal Ryan marched through the halls of Trinity Lutheran Monday donning orange and black stripes.
Teacher Sarah Black said the school takes part in several community charities, but this stood out to the students since they were helping people who do not live in Amarillo.
"This was kind of a different take for them because it was for the disaster relief that we hear about in the news, the tornado victims," she said. "And we hear about that and so often you feel kind of helpless. And, so, we've been trying to teach the children that every little thing you do count."
Black also said the fundraiser helped the children to take an interest in current events.
Most of the money raised will go to the victims of the recent tornadoes in the Northeast.
