AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Rural Randall County will see a half-cent sales tax increase Sunday. Rural Randall County covers everything that is outside Amarillo and Canyon.
"I think, like most people, everyone is feeling over taxed," said Dan Jones, the co-owner of Motor Co. "And with everything else going up it's just another burden."
Right now, the sales tax in rural Randall County is 6 and a quarter percent. It is going up to 6 and three quarters.
The county figures the money should generate about $148,000.
"The biggest majority of everything will go to fire protection," said Randall County Judge Ernie Houdashell. "We probably will do some economic development later on."
The money will also be shared with Lake Tanglewood, Palisades and Timbercreek Canyon.
"A fire almost got my house last year," said Jones. "So it makes it a little more palatable."
Randall County voted on the tax increase Nov. 8.
Houdashell says many residents of rural Randall County thought they had the same sales tax as Amarillo and Canyon.
"Most people go to Amarillo anyway and may not even know they're getting a cheaper break out here," said Jones.
Amarillo and Canyon both pay 8.25%.
