CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) - Voters in eastern New Mexico said Tuesday that now is not the time to spend $9 million on a jail in Curry County. They rejected by 68 votes a bond proposal to expand and renovate the jail.
County officials say that because of overcrowding, the county will have to continue spending money out of state to house prisoners, mostly in Texas.
The Clovis News Journal (http://bit.ly/HUgRJZ ) reports the vote marked the second time in less than two years that voters have refused to approve bond issues for the jail.
More than 70 percent of voters rejected a $33 million plan in November 2010 that would have increased taxes to build a new jail and courthouse.
