AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The church known for bell ringers and kettles during the Christmas season celebrates more than just the holly, jolly holiday.
Unknown to some, The Salvation Army is a church. And everything it does is based on Jesus Christ and the faith that is the foundation of religion for millions of people worldwide.
"Easter is His death and resurrection," Salvation Army Maj. Tim Grider said. "That's where life really, truly begins. And behind all that we do, our purpose is to try to bring that message to them, to those who feel hopeless and there is no hope. Wrong- we believe that there is hope."
Children and adults alike attended Sunday school and worship at the Salvation Army Church before taking part in the traditional Easter egg hunt. Afterward, it was time for Sunday chicken. Maj. Grider said hunting eggs and getting prizes was fun for the kids, but the main focus of the Easter event was the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
"We want to take the opportunity to bring the message of salvation and the Gospel to those kids, to those adults no matter where they're from, no matter who they are, no matter what their social or economic status is."
The Salvation Army celebrates many holidays throughout the year, and Maj. Grider said with the help of the community the church will be able to continue giving support to people in need. He added that help comes with a boost of faith that can bring light into the life of someone who is living in darkness.
