AMARILLO, TEXAS -- A home intruder was hospitalized early Tuesday morning after police said the resident shot him.
Police said a man entered the home, located in the 3700 block of South Taylor, at about 3:45 a.m.
A female resident told officers she woke up when she heard her bedroom's closet door slam. She told police she saw a man standing by the closet and asked him what he was doing there. He replied by saying he was looking for "Jimmy."
The man then walked out of the room, police said.
Another resident said he was awakened by dogs barking and the sound of someone tapping at his window. Police said he retrieved a handgun and went into the hallway. The intruder, according to police, was in the same hallway and was challenged by the resident.
As the suspect started to approach the resident in an aggressive manner, the resident fires on shot, police said. The shot struck the man in the leg, police said.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital but his injuries were not listed as life-threatening.
Police said they believe the suspect was intoxicated and may have entered through an unlocked door.
No charges have been filed in this case.
