AMARILLO, TEXAS -- There is a lot of construction going on around the Panhandle, and even more across Texas.

More than 1,000 work zones are in operation across the state at any given time.

The Texas Department of Transportation has created Work Zone Awareness 2012 to help educate people about the safety concerns in those zones.

In 2010, more than 12,000 crashes happened in work zones in Texas and 100 people were killed.

In the Amarillo area two people were killed in construction zones that same year.

TxDOT officials said they want to put an end to these preventable accidents.

"Be aware that people are working there and its like their office," said Tracy Tellman with TxDot. "So you're driving through their office. Be ready and aware of your surroundings and don't be distracted in your vehicle."
