Tourism is one of the top money makers for the city of Amarillo.
Friday, representatives from area attractions celebrated National Tourism Day at the Texas Travel Information Center.
Millions of people visit Amarillo and the surrounding areas each year to visit local attractions like Cadillac Ranch and the Palo Duro Canyon.
"It's so exciting because Amarillo is becoming such a destination," said Beth Duke with Center City.
The Amarillo tour industry is booming.
"It is one of the areas biggest industries," said Eric Miller with the Amarillo Convention Visitors Counsel. "We attract about 1.7-1.8 million visitors."
And all of these visitors are having a big impact on our local economy.
"Maybe $300 million a year, maybe a little more," said Miller.
And as Center City continues to improve the down town area, the hope, is that more people will be spending time in Amarillo.
"Downtown is the place to eat, play and stay," said Duke. "And we're really trying hard to work with the other destinations so people spend more time here in Amarillo."
Amarillo was ranked as one of the top leisure destinations in Texas.
"That puts us in the same area as San Antonio, Dallas, Fort Worth. Then Amarillo comes in there too," said Miller.
The goal, is to get people off I-40 and make a stop in Amarillo.
