AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Cory Nathan is one of many students who just graduated from college.

And graduation means it is time to get your resume in shape.

"I had a lot of help from the school," Nathan said. "in our portfolio class we had to make a resume."

Colleges have many resources available to help students and they should try to take advantage of.

Unlike Scott Thompson, the CEO of Yahoo who was fired for lying about his education, Nathan does not believe in padding his resume.

"I think it's kind of messed up," he said. "It takes the honesty away from people."

But, when it comes to little white lies on a resume, many people are guilty of it."

The most common exaggeration is usually over education.

Sammie Artho helps students at Amarillo College polish their resume.

"I always advice them to asses their skills accurately," said Artho. "Because bottom line, with any job the student then has to back up their skill with their work activity."

Many bosses even check online before making a hiring decision.

"These days everything can be checked on social media or linked in," said Nathan. "If you're lying I think it's kind of easy for people to call you out."

But there are qualities that Artho said will help spice up a resume that many students do not think are resume worthy.

"For example, a lot of students don't give themselves credit for being good problem solvers or having good intrapersonal skills," she said.

The bottom line is, make yourself stand out--but accurately.
