AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Sunday went to the dogs as the 19th Annual Amarillo SPCA MuttFest kicked off for another year of food, drinks and new tricks.
Dog owners wandered around Memorial Park while their four-legged companions of every breed and size caught frisbees, relaxed in the shade and even sported their purple mohawks. Vaccinations were also available for the canines at discounted prices. The funds raised by the event go to the local non-profit organization for shelter maintenance and animal upkeep.
"We're a no-kill shelter, so we have some of the animals for quite a while," MuttFest Co-Chair Mary Ramirez said. "And, you know, food and vet care- it just takes care of all our expenses that we incur."
Adding to the excitement of the event was a food truck from the Food Network's "The Great Food Truck Race," which is in town along with several other food truck competitors.
Community businesses and organizations such as Texas Panhandle Pet Savers and Amarillo Animal Control set up booths to spread the word about their services and love for animals.
Ramirez said Sunday's attendance was among the highest it has ever been.
