BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) - A 20-year-old man has been arrested after a Beaumont teenager was found shot to death behind the wheel of a parked car. Eighteen-year-old Marcus Simon died following the shooting yesterday morning. Two other men, ages 19 and 20, were injured in the shooting.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Death penalties have become a rarity in some parts of Texas stemming from a string of inmates who have been exonerated by DNA and other new evidence. The San Antonio Express-News reports the last death sentenced returned by a Bexar County jury in San Antonio came in 2009. Recent state and national surveys continue to show support for the death penalty.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - An Austin nonprofit and a developer are planning a 4240 million tower near the Texas Capitol that would include a planetarium and science museum. Austin Planetarium and developer KUD International predict the project will attract more than 600,000 visitors a year. Plans call for construction to begin as soon as late 2014.
DALLAS (AP) - Investors who bought Dallas-based TXU Corp. five years ago now see the company is worth less than the $45 billion they paid. Despite being mired in debt, the Dallas Morning News reports the company now called Energy Future Holdings is paying multimillion-dollar retention bonuses to executives. Experts say the company and its investors were ambushed by falling natural gas prices.
