AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Among many Memorial Day celebrations Monday was another ceremony to dedicate a historical marker at the American Legion Post in Amarillo.

The American Legion Hanson Post 54 at 617 SW 7th Avenue. The dedication started at two o'clock monday afternoon. The dedicated marker will commemorate Captain Hanson, former Amarillo doctor and veteran of World War I, and the American Legion Post by the Texas Historical Society.

Commander Charles Franzel felt the dedication was appropriate to have on Memorial Day for several reasons.

"A lot of Americans are rediscovering patriotism," he said. "They really are, they know that there's a need for it. Memorial Day is of course a day that we remember the people that paid the ultimate price."

The newly-dedicated American Legion Post building was first obtained for veterans back in the 1940's, Franzel said.
